I hope your 2022 is off to a phenomenal start,
As for me, I'm still basking in the spirit of the holidays (or, I may be having CoVid induced delusional episodes - I seem to have lost a week).
Maybe it's because I lost my parents at a young age or maybe its because I am a girl who likes a party, but I love a good tradition. Small ones are the best for me. They seem to keep me grounded and connected.
I read somewhere (on the internet so it must be true) that it takes two years to make something a tradition.
Well, we have a tradition that's been going on a bit longer.
For the last 20+ years, our family gets together with the Costa's for Christmas brunch before we scatter around to our respective relatives or other commitments. (It's hard to believe that the kids weren't even teenagers when this all started. The menu is always the same; no one wants it to vary (brioche and raisin bread french toast, maple sausages, bacon, some sort of egg dish, juice, real maple syrup, and the usual assortment of Christmas cookies).
There are presents and games and a lot of frivolity. Good feelings and good times are heaped on generously.
I get how fortunate we are to have this. I know that our brains are wired to seek out the negative and that it's easy to look back in anger, or sadness, or regret. Life often seems to let us down.
But I choose to focus on the positive...not always easy but always rewarding.
This is the stuff that memories are made of. This is what my kids look forward to.
The parts of the past that they happily bring with them into their futures. That they are now sharing with their children.
There is great comfort in knowing that, no matter what else is going on, this little tradition stands pat.
Here's one for the memory books! Our "crew" celebrating this Christmas (less our newest addition who was napping and Alicia who was the photographer).
Do you have any long time traditions in your family? I'd love to hear about them. (If not, I strongly urge you to start one - start making happy memories that can be passed down.)
Here's to traditions...past, present, and future!
