This weekend is filled with family, fourth of July festivities, friends, fireworks, a lot of talk about freedom, and a couple of firsts.
We (my husband and I) are at the Jersey Shore for the 4th of July weekend. The beach is definitely my happy place. As we sat on the boardwalk to watch the display - I was filled with what can only be described as pride as I looked around at the the diversity, the melting pot that makes up our nation, that came out to celebrate our country. I'm usually not that sappy - but the feeling was indescribable. With all the negative talk and all the atrocities happening in the world today - this was little slice of heaven. Everyone came together for one purpose - and it was a celebration. Lots of ooh's and aah's and flag waving. Seemingly all nationalities, religions, cultures, ages. It was nice. A throw-back, Kodak moment for sure.
Add to that tons of talk, waxing poetic, and observations on freedom. Seemingly every pundit, every blog post, every newscaster had their own version of what freedom means and how precious it is.
New York City Public School families are experiences their first week of summer vacation - a kind of freedom for kids. It's still new, and most parents and kids have not yet had time to be bored, irritated, or start that "summer slide" that invariably takes place over the extended time away from school. They are just enjoying the change of pace. Which brings me to two
